Many years ago, I wrote down a phone number for a casual job from a poster that should have been removed from the student union vacancies board. I called the number – and spoke to a surprised manager who had both forgotten about the poster, and had also just had two of his casual student workforce walk out of the building. My call put me in the right place at the right time. I walked into a well-paid part-time role that would see me through a Classics degree and ultimately lead to a long and happy career in IT recruitment.
There’s an element of luck to the start of many careers.
Having very little to lose can give you a large risk appetite at that point – but can you continue to rely on chance and circumstance to progress through your career?
I’ve worked in two countries, and had a variety of roles. But truth be told, the first time I proactively decided to change direction and make a plan was when I started Vocative. So is it important to have a plan? Could just waiting for opportunity to knock again stymie your career?
In 2022 we are seeing the workplace flex and change with the aftershocks of the pandemic. The workforce was forced to grapple with remote working during lockdown, and new hybrid models are the norm now that the necessity to work from home has lifted.
Much has been said about the management of teams, the promotion of products, the delivery of service in the remote working system – but what about taking control of your individual career path, finding opportunities and putting yourself in the right place at the right time?
The current market is one in which recruitment specialists can really add value – both to the individuals who want to steer their own ships on the choppy waters of career opportunities, and to the employers who want to secure the best talent.
There will always be a place for the story of the person who simply happens to be in the right place at the right time. Everyone likes the chance meeting, but when it comes to finding the perfect person for your team, growing your business or securing a role that stretches your skills and develops new talents, you need more than chance.
Vocative is here to help you to be in the right place at the right time.
